Text Box: Reading The
Sermon On The Mount

Reading the Sermon on the Mount is more like having a relationship with someone than reading the bible. Parts of the sermon whisper in your ear encouraging words that lift the soul. “Blessed are the poor in spirit,” we hear whispered, and our broken soul is healed. At other times the sermon picks at us and points out our faults as any good sibling will do. People typically do not like to hear that continuing in anger is equally as bad as murdering a person.
Such words can be frustrating, and one’s tendency is to remove the words from sight just as a frustrated brother may slam the door on his sister.
Reading these words will lead every one of us to discover that we have not lived up to our full potential as disciples of Christ. However, shutting the book away will do very little good. Jesus really does want us to follow his teachings. A much more productive way to read the sermon is to return back to those healing words, “Blessed are the poor in spirit,” each time we feel the sting of the truth. Those healing words will encourage us to continually try to live the life Jesus envisioned for us and for the world. The sermon is not something you sit down to read once; reading it is a way of life.
